Ten Helpful Dental Tips for Optimum Oral Health

How to Recognize a Stroke

Ten Helpful Dental Tips

  1. Brush twice a day for a minimum of 2 minutes each time with a Sonicare toothbrush using sulcular brushing technique focused at a 45 degree angle to the gumline.
  2. Floss once a day using correct scraping movement between the teeth; taking care not to pull floss back and forth, damaging the gum tissue.
  3. Use a tongue scraper after brushing in the morning.
  4. Think of the 80/20 rule when brushing. Focus 80% of the effort at the gumline and on the four most posterior teeth in each arch, not forgetting the tongue side.
  5. Stay away from acidic beverages and drink lots of water especially after having sweets or sugary beverages.
  6. Make sure you are taking a good multivitamin and at least 1000mg of Vitamin C daily.
  7. Make sure you have no probing depths above 3-4mm and keep your plaque and bleeding scores above 90%.
  8. Use an antimicrobial rinse after brushing (example: Listerine)
  9. Have any area that collects food or snags floss repaired to avoid chronic inflammation.
  10. Stay up to date on your recare appointments!

Recognizing a Stroke

The key is to remember the first three letters of the word stroke-STR. These stand for three steps to help recognize a victim of a stroke. This is done by asking three simple questions:

  1. S – Ask the individual to SMILE.
  2. T – Ask the person to TALK and SPEAK A SIMPLE SENTINCE coherently. That is, ask him/her to repeat a sentence three times. “It is sunny out today”.
  3. R – Ask them to RAISE BOTH ARMS. If they have trouble with any one of these Tasks, call 911 and describe the symptoms to the dispatcher.
  4. They now have a new sign of a stroke. A fourth indicator is the tongue. Ask the person to “Stick out your tongue!” If the tongue is “crooked” or if it goes to one side or the other, this is also a good indication of a stroke.
