Oral Surgery Post-Op Instructions

Healing, following oral surgery, is usually fast and uncomplicated if you follow these instructions:
  • Bleeding: Bite on the gauze sponge for 30 minutes. Replace it with a moistened gauze sponge for another 30 minutes, if fresh blood is present. If bleeding continues after this time, bite on a dry tea bag for 30 more minutes. If you are still bleeding after this, please contact our office.
  • Do not drink or eat hot foods today, as you may dissolve or loosen the healing blood clot. Eat cool, soft, nutritious foods today.
  • If you smoke, refrain for 24 to 36 hours.
  • For the next 24 hours, do not drink through a straw or “suck” on the wound site. This can create negative pressure inside the oral cavity and can disturb the blood clot causing bleeding, slow healing and/or bone pain called a dry socket.
  • Do not eat hard foods for a few days in the part of your mouth that received the surgery. You could disturb the healing.

Do not overexert yourself during the next 24 hours.

If the points below apply to you:

Sutures (stitches)

  1. Were not placed.
  2. Were placed. You need an appointment in 7 days to have them removed.
  3. Were placed. You do not need an appointment to remove them. They will dissolve by themselves in a few days.

Pain Medication:

  1. You have not been given a prescription for pain. You may experience minor discomfort. Take ALEVE or TYLENOL for mild discomfort. If over the counter pain medication does not control your pain, please let us know, and we will re-evaluate whether a prescription medication is needed.
  2. You have been given a prescription for pain. You may elect to try managing the discomfort with an over the counter medication, before filling the script.

Anti-biotic:

  1. You have not been given an antibiotic.
  2. You have been given a prescription for an antibiotic. Please take the medication until all tablets are gone.

Cold Application:

  1. Not necessary following your surgery.
  2. Use cold packs on the outside of your face near the surgery site for 2 hours when you arrive home.

As always if you have any questions please feel free to call.
