What do you know about dental implants?

Although now known as the most commonly practiced method of tooth replacement in modern dentistry today, implant dentistry wasn’t always a treatment so highly thought of.

Here at Dr. Larry Saylor’s dental practice in Brandon, Florida, we want to share with you the origins and advancements in dental implantology. We hope you gain a little insight into the fantastic technology that is now readily available to our patients today.

Let us take you back…

In the past 30 years, the dental implant placement method has greatly evolved, but how did we get to the technology that is now so universally practiced?

Originally before osseointegrated dental implants, there were two main types of implant treatments used – there was the blade implant method and the subperiosteal implant framework. These two styles had a combined success rate of about 50% and when they failed, they often had devastating implications to the patient.

The Academy of Osseointegration explains these treatments as tricky to predict and found that dentists of the time were even telling patients to avoid dental implants entirely. This made dental implants a dirty word that many dentists cringed away from.

Not only were these implant treatments producing irregular results for patients, if they failed (which a lot did) they had devastating implications to the jaw bone. These results included damage to the mouth, making further treatment to the area difficult and sometimes even impossible to restore.

Along came Osseointegration

In May 1982, a Swedish research physician introduced the concept of osseointegration for dental implant treatments, sparking excitement throughout the American dental industry. By 1992, the first ever osseointegrated dental implant was placed in the USA.

What is an osseointegrated dental implant?

Dental implants commonly practiced today have two different stages of completion after surgery.

  1. The osseointegration stage where the tooth root replacement is embedded in the jaw
  2. The restoration stage where a crown is placed on top to resemble a natural tooth

This method is so successful because it uses a titanium rod to mimic the natural tooth root

By replacing the root with this particular titanium screw-shaped fixture, the patient’s natural jawbone accepts it as if it was an ordinary tooth. This is the process of osseointegration, and is practiced in surgery for other medical uses as well, particularly common for knee reconstruction treatments.
